If your child is struggling with writing, don't leave it to chance.

Writing is a skill they will need throughout school and beyond. They will need to explain their thinking, communicate their ideas, complete academic work, prepare for entrance exams and applications, and eventually communicate effectively in interviews and the workplace.

The earlier children develop those skills, the more time they have to practise them and become confident using them. Writing becomes more complicated as children get older. They are expected to write more, organize their ideas, use more complex language, spell accurately, and communicate their thinking clearly.

If the foundations are not secure, the demands only increase.

Building those skills early gives children time to develop them before writing becomes significantly more difficult.

When writing feels difficult, children can start to avoid it. They may keep their answers short, become frustrated, or decide that they are simply “not good at writing.”

That is not where we want them to go.

When children have the skills and strategies they need, they can approach writing with greater confidence and independence.

A child should not have to struggle for years before someone works out what is getting in the way.

Writing requires children to manage planning, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, handwriting, and sentence construction at the same time. If some of those skills are not yet automatic, writing can become unnecessarily difficult.

That is where targeted support can help. I help students develop practical strategies they can eventually use independently as the demands of school increase.

If your child is struggling with writing, I would be happy to talk with you about what may be getting in the way and what support might be appropriate.
