Many international school parents in Tokyo start to worry about their child’s reading and spelling when difficulties continue into the later elementary grades.

If you notice that your child:

  • still has to sound out many common words

  • reads very slowly or avoids reading

  • guesses at words instead of reading them

  • has difficulty spelling words they have seen many times

  • reads a word correctly on one page but cannot recognize it later

  • struggles to remember spelling patterns or letter sounds

By the end of Grade 2, your child has moved beyond learning letters, sounds, and the basic concepts of print and should be developing more automatic reading, spelling, and writing skills. if your child is still struggling with these skills despite receiving quality instruction, I think it is worth looking into why because your child has already had several years of formal reading instruction.

Having your child's reading assessed can help you understand your child's strengths.

What does an assessment actually tell you?

An assessment gives clearer picture of what they can do, where they are struggling, and what support may be appropriate. I offer both informal reading screenings and more formal reading and spelling assessments to help parents understand where their child is struggling and what may be contributing to those difficulties.
