If your child is struggling with English at school, we can help identify where they are having difficulty and provide targeted support to help them access the curriculum more independently.

How do international schools in Tokyo support children need more English Support?

EAL stands for English as an Additional Language.

You may also see terms such as ELS (English Language Support) used by international schools here in Tokyo.

The terminology varies from school to school, but the basic idea is the same: providing students with additional support to develop the English they need to participate successfully in school.

What if the school support is not enough?

EAL is not only for children who are new to English.

Your child may speak English confidently and still struggle with the language they need to be successful at their international school.

They may have difficulty with:

  • Academic vocabulary

  • Reading comprehension

  • Following complex instructions

  • Writing

  • Explaining their ideas

  • Understanding what a question is asking

Maybe your child needs additional, targeted support to develop the specific language skills that are getting in the way of their learning.

That is where outside support can be helpful.
