The parent interview at an international school in Tokyo is almost like a job interview.

The school is getting to know you, but you are also getting to know the school. You are both trying to decide if this environment is the right fit for your child.

Before the interview, it is best to think about how you would answer some basic questions:

  • Why are you interested in this school?

  • Why are you considering leaving your current school?

  • What are your child's strengths?

  • What does your child find difficult?

  • What are you looking for in a school?

  • How long do you plan to stay in Tokyo?

One thing I often see is that parents know their child very well but have never actually talked about these questions together. The interview is not the best time to figure out what you think.

If English is not your first language, you do not need perfect English. You need to be able to explain your family's situation and your child clearly and comfortably.

But the parent interview is only one part of preparing for an international school. Your child also needs to be ready for what comes after acceptance, the academic, language, and learning demands of the classroom.

That is where we can help. We work with families to identify what their child needs to be ready for school and provide targeted support before they enter the classroom.

If you need specialized help preparing for the parent interview or application itself, I can also refer you to an experienced admissions professional. Kinota Braithwaite - Learning & Assessment Specialist
