Here are 4 Things Parents Should Consider When Choosing an International School in Tokyo

Updated: Oct 11
As an international school teacher who has taught at The Montessori School of Tokyo, ASIJ, Nishimachi, and ISSH, here are four things I would look at before choosing a school for your child.
When researching international schools in Tokyo, it is easy to focus on reputation, facilities, and what other parents say.
Those things matter.
But they don't tell you whether the school is right for your child.
1. Don't choose a school just because everyone knows it.
A strong reputation is important, but ask what happens when a child needs help.
How does the school support students who are struggling academically, socially, or with organization?
How do teachers communicate with families?
How flexible is the school when a child needs a different approach?
2. Be careful with other parents' opinions.
Other parents can give you valuable information, but remember that you're hearing about their child not yours.
Instead of simply asking, "Do you like the school?", ask:
What has been difficult?
What do you wish you had known before enrolling?
Those answers can be much more useful.
3. Don't ignore schools you haven't heard about.
There are smaller and newer schools in Tokyo that may not have the same name recognition.
If a school meets your requirements, visit it. Observe the students. If you can talk to the teachers and administrators who would actually be working with your child.
4. Think about the commute.
An hour-long train ride, a bus transfer, and a long walk might sound manageable when you're looking at a school on paper.
Now imagine doing that commute every school day.
For some children, it's fine.
For others, it can leave them exhausted before the school day even begins.
