There are a lot of tutors in Tokyo.

So why work with me?

Because my background goes well beyond traditional tutoring.

I have spent nearly two decades working in international education, including positions at some of Tokyo's best-known international schools. I have been a classroom teacher at The Montessori School of Tokyo, a department head and school librarian at International School of the Sacred Heart, and have also worked with students at The American School in Japan and Nishimachi International School.

I understand what international school teachers expect from students. I understand what happens when a child is bright and capable but something is getting in the way of their ability to consistently show what they know.

And I have worked with children across a very wide range of needs.

Some struggle with organization, attention, working memory, or getting started. Some are doing reasonably well but have weaknesses in their foundational skills that will become a problem later if they are not addressed.

Others have already had tutoring, but the tutoring has not solved the problem.

That is where my work is different.

I am not simply looking at the next homework assignment or helping a child prepare for the next test. I want to understand why the child is struggling in the first place.

I hold a Professional Certificate in Educational Therapy from the University of California, Riverside, and I have additional training in Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy through an International Dyslexia Association–accredited program. I can also administer Level B standardized academic and adaptive-behavior assessments, including the WIAT-4 and Vineland-3, when a more detailed understanding of a student's strengths and areas of difficulty is needed.

My goal is to figure out what is getting in the way and provide the support that actually makes a difference in your child's life.

My work with children and families has also extended beyond traditional school settings.

Through Learn With Kinota, the anti-bullying and education initiative I founded, I have spoken to schools and communities across Japan about anti-bullying,  friendship, inclusion, and creating safer school environments.

That work has been featured by NHK, including NHK World Japan, and by The Asahi Shimbun and other Japanese media.

I am the author of Mio the Beautiful, a children's book about bullying, identity, and standing up for others. The book was selected as a Sakura Medal nominee, putting the work directly into the hands of international-school students and families across Japan.

That part of my work is important because education is not only about academic results.

A child has to feel that they belong.

More Than Just Tutoring Tokyo exists because some children need more than a tutor.

They need an experienced educator who can look at the child, understand the school environment they are working in, identify what is getting in the way, and help them move learning forward.

I work with a small number of families each year, and most of those families come to me through word of mouth.

That is how I prefer to work.

Because when a parent recommends me to another family, they are not recommending a tutoring service. They are recommending someone they trust with their child.
