Perhaps the family is moving from another country to Tokyo and they start to wonder:

Are there any international schools in Tokyo that will accept my child if they need extra support?

The short answer is yes, there many international schools in Tokyo that do accept children that need support or have identified learning differences.

Every school is different, and what I think matters most is the level of support your child needs and whether the school has the people and resources to provide it.

Most international schools in Tokyo at the elementary level have dedicated learning support teachers and established systems for supporting students with additional learning needs. In addition to providing in house learning support they may also expect families to work with outside specialists. There are schools who state that they are not able to accommodate or meet the needs of a child who requires a high level of individual support. I always tell parents that you are your child's advocate. By understanding what support the school actually provides and whether it is likely to be enough for your child for your child to be successful.

That being said, learning support can look very different from one international school in Tokyo to another. A child who needs occasional help with reading or math has very different needs than a child who needs daily behavioral one-to-one support. I do believe that every child can succeed with the right amount of support. Your child can succeed!

Here is my advice for families moving to Tokyo. As a parent you are not just looking for a school that will accept your child. You are looking for a school that can understand their needs and provide appropriate support. Kinota Braithwaite - Learning & Assessment Specialist
