This is one of the hardest things I have experienced in my 19 years of teaching. When this happens to a family, I have a lot of compassion for everyone involved.

I have worked with many families after they have received this news from their school.

The child may be struggling in the classroom, having repeated difficulties with teachers or classmates, or simply not responding to the support the school has been able to provide.

Eventually, the school may reach the point where it believes it cannot continue meeting the child's needs.

Whatever brought the family to this point, they are suddenly faced with a very practical problem:

The child needs a new school.

I have worked with many families in exactly this situation.

To the international school administrators and teachers in Tokyo reading this: if you can see a situation heading in this direction, reach out. Sometimes getting another perspective early can help.

To the parents whose children are attending international schools in Tokyo: if your child's school is raising serious concerns, don't wait until the situation becomes a crisis. Reach out and find out what is happening and what options you have. Kinota Braithwaite - Learning & Assessment Specialist
